The 14th annual DR .DON GAMES were held at Rotary Park on Saturday July 26, 2008.. Registration and bar-b-q lunch will begin at 11:30. It's the first time the event will be held on Saturday. Why? We need George.
You could have "read all about it" in the RIVER REPORTER , THE TOWNE CRIER and THE SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT. It's a great experience for kids to see themselves in the newspaper. The 14th Annual DR. DON GAMES, "the greatest games ever," featured the ritual passing of the Olympic Torch. To commemorate the flood of '06,the new game, celebrating many locals as Basement Bucket Bailers, was again a huge success.
The George Silverman Brush'em Up Arena, dedicated in '03,was the place to bust plaque in '06. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the GAMES, the Pyramids were judged by "real" judges. Sullivan County Family Court Judge Mark Meddaugh has perfected his scoring technique, judging in the last three years and set the bar for the esteemed panel of judges that included New York State Supreme Court Justice, the (most) Honorable Anthony Kane and Sullivan County Court Justice Burt Ledina. Judge Meddaugh, joined by his wife Robin, lead the esteemed panel again in '06 Thanks, Your Honor!
The DR. DON GAMES were created in 1995 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dr.Don Simkin's dental practice in Livingston Manor. The GAMES have since attracted the co-sponsorship of the Livingston Manor Community Center and the Livingston Manor Rotary Club. Dr. Don is a member of the Olympic family and received the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch in the 1996 Torch Relay across the U.S. As an avid Olympic fan, Dr. Don developed this field day for kids based on the Olympic format. In each Olympic year, the Olympic Torch is lit in Livingston Manor to open the GAMES.
At the GAMES, all participants are treated to a bar-b-q lunch featuring kosher hot dogs. The Opening Ceremony follows at which the four teams - Red, Blue, Yellow and Green are introduced and the day's officials and schedule presented. Entertainment, while brief, features Gary Siegel on trumpet. The Olympic Torch is displayed and carried in procession to the first event during Olympic years. The GAMES are designed for kids ages 4-14 and are held at various sites throughout Rotary Park. Supervision is provided by Rotarians and other adults. Activities include The Quadrathalon, Shoe Kick, Sports Suitcase Relay, Brush'em up Plaque Busters, a Pyramid and the 4-Way Test Tug o' War. Each team member receives a t-shirt with the DR. DON GAMES logo in the team's color. In addition, each participant receives a tooth brush and other small favors. Kids learn team work and have fun in an atmosphere where fun, not winning, is the ultimate goal. Dr. Don would like to thank those people who have, year after year, contributed to the success of the GAMES: George Silverman, Gary and Judy Siegel, Lee and Marge Siegel, the late Alan Fishman, Bob Freedman, the late Emerson Sparks, John Checcia, Bob and Cathy Goodfriend, Steve and Mary Grossnas, the Livingston Manor Rotary Club Bar-B-Q Team (Pete Hare and Tom and Diane Babich) and Ellen Singer.
